goji berry cultivationVitamin Deficiencies Explained

Vitamins perform important functions for the body. They are necessary to sustain life. The body takes in vitamins from the food that we eat and it needs the proper amount of each vitamin. The recommended daily requirement of each vitamin is published by the Food and Drug Administration and most foodstuffs have their ingredients on labels with the amount of the requirement that they fulfill. The vitamins required by humans are vitamin, A, B1, B2, B6, B12, C, D, E, K and niacin, folic acid, biotin and pantothenic acid. Some of these are fat soluble, like A, D, E and K which means if the intake is greater than the need, they can build up in the fatty tissues and liver where they are stored. The others are water soluble which means the body uses what it needs and then expels the rest through urination. They cant build up and store problems.

Since vitamins are so necessary for the proper functioning of the body, not having enough of a vitamin can lead to problems. Pregnant women are always given special pre-natal vitamins to take during pregnancy to guard against birth defects. During pregnancy women need certain amounts of vitamins and minerals to protect their health and promote the proper development of the baby. A deficiency of folic acid can cause birth defects. A lack of proper amounts of vitamin D can lead to bone problems. A lack of vitamin K can lead to bleeding problems and hemorrhaging in the baby.

Vitamin deficiencies can lead to numerous health problems. Insufficient amount of vitamin A can lead to visual problems. Ricketts and bone problems can be results of a vitamin D deficiency. A deficiency of vitamin E can result in cystic fibrosis and celiac disease. A deficiency of the various B-complex vitamins can lead to a variety of problems. Heart problems, sensory disorders, nervous system disorders, memory loss, anemia, dementia, hypertension, weakness, painful limbs, mucous membrane problems, dermatitis, and death are some of the problems that a deficiency in the B-complex vitamins can lead to. A deficiency in vitamin C can lead to weak capillaries and bleeding. This list of deficiencies is not inclusive but it can illustrate the importance of proper diet and proper vitamin intake. If you do not eat the proper diet that gives you the proper amount of vitamins, you might want to consider taking multiple vitamins.

Simple Dinner Sets Go A Long Way

The time has come when Christmas is only just around the corner and you still have to go shopping to buy presents, decorations, food, Christmas tree etc. You begin to panic as you have realised that you have to buy a completely new range of dinner sets as your old sets have chipped, washed out or cracked. On the other hand, maybe this is your first Christmas dinner to cook for the family and friends, and you have no dishware to serve your dinner.

This year I have noticed a new trend in simple dinner sets and fine crockery for special occasions. People prefer to purchase simple earthenware designs that match well with plain shades of place mats, napkin with a simple napkin ring and long tinted glasses. Putting a simple spread out for Christmas can be more effective than spending huge amounts of money on expensive dishware and tablecloths that will only be used once or twice in a year.

Dinner sets are something that have been around for more than a century, but have not always been a fashion accessory at the dinner table. Having the right set for a special occasion appears to be an essential part of the preparation process for a big meal such as Christmas. It is not enough now to view dishware as just a tool to eat food from; the design of the plate plays an important part in displaying the appeal of the food and its presentation. It is more common now to serve food on plain white plates than it was during the 1980s whereby flower patterned plates were more popular.

History

Historically dinner sets were made from wood, metals, pewter and even animal skulls. Modern dishware is made from stoneware, earthenware, porcelain, glass and melamine resin. The Chinese had discovered the process of making porcelain around 600AD and had begun trading porcelain objects with the European during the 1300s. Owning porcelain made plates was a must-have for the Europeans. It was not until 1708 that a German potter in Meissen discovered the Chinese porcelain making process, beginning a new range of great European potteries.

Some of the most popular and best-known potters were also founded during this period. Famous brands such as Royal Saxon, Wedgewood, Royal Copenhagen and Spode. The practise of collecting souvenir plates was not popularised until 1800s by Patrick Palmer-Thomas, a Dutch-English nobleman who impressed Victorian audiences with his public displays of plates. The first collectible items 'Behind the Frozen Window', was credited to the Danish namely Bing and Grondahl. Christmas designed plates were then produced by many of the European countries particularly that of Royal Copenhagen and the Rosenthal series in 1910. It was not long before the European designs were introduced to the U.S with sales going up in souvenir shops, department stores and gift shops.

Plates are still used as a collectible item, mainly for older generations rather than the younger culture. Some popular collectibles are usually from abroad with intricate paintings of the countries national customs captured onto the dish. With different shapes and thickness available, dishwares are an important element in keeping up a good appearance of one's efforts on producing a good spread and the most popular designs are simple with a few small accessories to jazz it up.

goji berries gillianHow To Become A Healthy Eater

Healthy eating is all about balanced and moderate eating, consisting of healthy meals at least three times per day. Healthy eaters eat many different types of foods, not limiting themselves to one specific food type or food group.

Being a healthy eater requires you to become both educated and smart about what healthy eating actually is. Being food smart isn't about learning to calculate grams or fat, or is it about studying labels and counting calories.

Eating healthy requires quite a bit of leeway. You might eat too much or not enough, consume foods that are sometimes more or less nutritious. However, you should always fuel your body and your brain regularly with enough food to keep both your mind and body strong and alert.

A healthy eater is a good problem solver. Healthy eaters have learned to take care of themselves and their eating with sound judgment and making wise decisions. Healthy eaters are always aware of what they eat, and know the effect that it will have on their bodies.

When someone is unable to take control of their eating, they are also likely to get out of control with other aspects of life as well. They could end up spending too much, talking too much, even going to bed later and later.

You should always remember that restricting food bin any way is always a bad thing. Healthy eating is a way of life, something that you can do to enhance your body or your lifestyle. If you've thought about making your life better, healthy eating is just the place to start. You'll make life easier for yourself, those around you, and even your family.

Eating healthy is something we all would like to do, although it can be hard. In order to eat healthy, you must first make the right food choices. Eating healthy is all about what you eat, which makes the choices very crucial to your results.

Healthy Food Choices

Vegetables

These should be varied, as you should eat 2 1/2 cups of them each day. You should start eating more of the dark vegetables, such as broccoli and spinach. Carrots and sweet potatoes are good as well. You should also eat more dry beans such as peas, pinto beans, and even kidney beans.

Grains

You should consume 6 ounces of grains per day. To do this, you can eat 3 ounces of whole grain cereals, breads, rice, crackers, or pasta. You can get an ounce of grains in a single slice of bread, or 1 cut of cereal.

Fruits

Fruits are very important. You should try to eat 2 cups of them each day. Focus on eating a variety, such as fresh, frozen, canned, or even dried fruit. You can drink fruit juices as well, although you should use moderation when doing so.

Milk

Milk is your calcium rich friend. For adults, 3 cups is the ideal goal. For kids 2 - 8, 2 cups is where you want to be. When choosing milk products or yogurt, you should go for fat-free or low-fat. Those of you who don't like milk or can't have it, should go for lactose free products or other sources of calcium such as fortified foods and beverages.

Beans And Meat

Eating 5 ounces a day is the ideal goal, as you should go lean with your protein. When eating meat, always bake it,grill it, or broil it, as this will prevent grease from adding to the equation. You should vary your protein as well, with more fish, beans, peas, and nuts.

When cooking your food, you should also limit solid fats such as butter, margarine, shortening, and lard. These foods may add flavor to your dishes, although they can also help raise your cholesterol as well. Therefore, you should try to add these foods and any foods that happen to contain them.

To help keep your saturated fat, trans fat, and sodium low, you can check the nutrition facts label. This label can be found on the food package and will tell you all the information you need to know about the food item.

By picking your foods wisely and watching what you eat, you'll help control your lifestyle. Exercise is great as well, as it goes along perfect with a healthy eating lifestyle. No matter what your age may be, eating healthy will help you keep your active lifestyle for years and years - even help you and your health in the long run as well.

Freedom, peace of mind, and joy are not just for other people: They're for you, too!

Nature's Pharmacy

"Let your food be your medicine, and your medicine be your food." Hippocrates

Good nutrition is one of the most important factors in determining your health, vitality and longevity. Yet these days we are bombarded with so much information that it's hard to decipher fact from fiction. The truth of the matter is, it doesn't have to be that hard. Nature has already done the work for us and provides us with everything we need to be healthy. We need to learn how to choose the most nutritious foods, eat with the seasons and meet our individual needs.

Of course there are lots of foods in the world and all of them contain some nutrients. But to get the most out of your food you want to focus on the ones that are the most nutrient dense. This means we want to choose foods with a higher number of nutrients versus calories. Think leafy green vegetables, vibrant colors of red, yellow, green and purple fruits and veggies...a colorful assortment of the rainbow will do you just fine.

The nutrients in these foods cannot be manufactured by our bodies, therefore it is best to get them from whole, fresh produce. Fresh food provides us with the nutrients, fiber and enzymes that are essential for energy, proper elimination and the maintenance of our bodies tissues and cells. You know, all the things that make us look and feel better and help prevent disease.

How do you do this you may ask? It's easy. You can find most of these foods at your local market, natural foods store or farmers market. It is best to look for the organically grown varieties. The produce that goes to large markets are often sprayed with pesticides that contain nitrogen, which causes the fruit or vegetable to absorb water, so it looks nice and plump, but lacks flavor. These foods are also often picked before they're ripe and shipped a long way, rather than vine- ripened and freshly picked just before they're sold. So feel and smell them first to assess their freshness or ask someone for assistance. I find the workers at the natural food stores and farmer's markets extremely knowledgeable and helpful.

Secondly, to make the produce that you buy more affordable and better tasting, your best choice is to buy what is in season, particularly at your local farmers market.

Lastly, we are all individuals and our needs vary greatly, especially as it relates to our body type, age, ethnicity and activity level. So what works for one person might not work for another.

Interior Garden's Prescription

The irony of all this is that you can be a healthy person by eating all the right foods but still be unhealthy if you are not happy. While it is very important to eat well, it is also very important to take inventory of what is working and not working in your personal life. Because everything we participate in and absorb through our senses is food. We metabolize the experience of life through our relationships, careers, exercise, spirituality, finances, creativity, thoughts etc. So a good question to ask yourself is what am I am eating, and what's eating me?

As a recovered anorexic and bulimic, I have first-hand experience of my personal life being completely out of balance and using food to assuage the pain. Besides having to relearn how to have a healthy relationship with food again, I had to clean up my personal life, what was not working, which created this imbalance. I found my greatest source of healing came from working on myself. As I cleaned up my life, I started to understand myself better. The more I understood myself, the more I accepted myself. And from that place of acceptance came a whole new level of self-love, peace and healing that catapulted me forward and from which all good things come!

1) Visit and stock up at your local farmer's market with summer's fresh and local produce
2) Keep hydrated with plenty of water
3) Add to that a healthy dose of exercise in the great outdoors
4) Wear sunscreen
5) Plan and accept times to socialize and connect with others
6) Be honest with yourself about what's not working. Refuse to practice self-delusion or to hope for the best
7) Visualize how you want things to be and take baby steps
8) Don't be afraid to get support or ask for help. No man is an island and we can't always do it ourselves
8) Find time to play and laugh until it hurts
9) Practice good self care: light a candle, get a massage, treat yourself to something nice
10) Open your heart and clear your mind
11) Find someone or something you can give your love to for a day, month, years or a lifetime

Packaging Containers (Forms) For Milk And Dairy Products

Bottle

The glass bottle still continues to be used for packaging of milk in some parts of the world. However in several developed countries and some of the developing countries it has lost ground to single service containers for packing milk.

Carton

The cartons are the preferred medium or form for packaging milk. They are also used for packaging liquid, frozen and coagulated milk products. Cartons are commonly made of food grade paper coated on the inside with wax or plastics; or lined with paper, plastic films or aluminium foil; or made of laminates. The merits include maximum space utilization in vehicles, and storage; ability to carry attractive printing and convenience as a means for stacking milk at super market shelves.

Retailers in the developed countries consider it the best available package for self-service selling. Cartons also play a role in the bulk packaging of milk. Cartons are commonly available either as preformed containers or as pre cut blanks ready to be formed in to containers. The carton systems in common use is

Perga (preformed) U.K

Pure pak (precut) USA

Zupack, Blockpak (precut) Germany

Tetra pak (precut) Sweden

Sachet / Bag / Pouch

Flexible waterproof plastic bags are commonly used for packaging milk and liquid dairy products. Since it is difficult to pour from these, a jug is usually also provided. The popular laminate for such bag is black or dark brown (to exclude UV light) or white. The bags may be formed from either a reeled or flat film. Generally it is a form-fill-seal system. Generally, ultra violet light is used to sterilize the films. The bags are heat-sealed and cut, the common sequence being to bottom seal, fill, move down on sachet length, top seal and cut off.

Can

This is commonly used for packaging all types of solid, semi solid and powdered dairy products. Cans are traditionally made of soldered tin plate steel, generally lacquered on the inner surface to prevent corrosion. Aluminium cans have now become famous. Cans are the most convenient for gas packing.

Box / Tub

It may be made up of wood or paper board. White wooden boxes / tubs are used for bulk packing of butter and butteroil with butter paper / plastic liners, paperboard boxes are generally used as over-wraps.

Barrel / Cask

Commonly made up of wood and coated with wax on the inner surface. Used for bulk packaging of sweetened condensed milk, semi solid butter milk / whey, butteroil etc.

Cup

They are generally made up of paper with wax or plastic coating on the inside. Used for packing frozen dairy products such as ice cream and coagulated milk products.

Collapsible tube

They are made up of aluminium and lacquered on the inside. Low cost, lightweight, ease of handling and dispensing, product protection are its advantages. Used for packing semi fluid products such as sweetened condensed milk, processed cheese spread etc.
