People aren't the only ones getting tattoos these days. Pretty soon you'll see fruits and vegetables with writing on them in the grocery stores. Instead of using stickers, fruit and vegetable labelers will be carving out names and expiration dates from the skin.

A new laser technology has been developed in the past couple of years to etch out "labels" from the skin of both hard-skinned and soft-skinned fruits and vegetables. The system created by Hydroponics is called the Natural Light Label System and has already been used in farms in South Carolina.

Is it better?

Developers of the laser labeling machines claim that it is. Of course they need to say this to sell their product, but many of the benefits they point out for consumers make sense.

If you compare the laser etching to the current sticker labels, there are a great deal of benefits. For one, you don't have to deal with peeling off a sticker at all. Two, there will be no potentially harmful and unhealthy adhesive residue left behind. And three, there is no potential harm of accidentally ingesting a sticker. You can just wash your produce and eat it.

On the other hand, some fruit and vegetable consumers say that they would prefer a removable label. Say they're chopping up vegetables for a party, they'd prefer not to serve the pieces that have writing on them. Writing on vegetables, whether or not it's edible, can seem unappealing. And removing the written on part ahead of time, or seeking out the cut up pieces with the writing can be much more of a hassle than removing a label.

Will people buy tattooed produce?

The fact of the matter is anything new might be slow to catch on, but once this new system of labeling is implemented, there shouldn't be much difference. Stickers are considered commonplace for the time being, but in the long run, stickered fruits and vegetables will probably be replaced. To put it another way, consumers aren't in control of what fruits and vegetables turn up in grocery stores; the retailers are. But, predicted consumer behavior is an important factor for retailers. In order for consumer behavior to fare well in the eyes of retailers, consumers will need to be aware of the technology's benefits. So, in a nutshell, the key is education. Hydroponics conducted a survey in 4 different big cities asking whether or not they would purchase tattooed produce. The result was: " When educated about laser labeling, consumers preferred it to the current labelling on edible skin/hard skin fruit and produce."

BBQ Ideas

Just picture this, a stunning backyard on a warm summer afternoon, delicious food and a sound system playing a smokin' jazz track or the newest upbeat tunes or some modern rock records. Fill up those pitchers with margaritas, or some vodka and pineapple-juice, or iced cordial for the kids. All that's left are the loved ones to come in numbers. I for one cannot think of a more appropriate time and setting for a barbeque.

Now, when planning the barbeque menu, don't forget that even the simplest of food are made totally delicious by the smoky barbeque taste. The classic sausages, burger patties, steaks, chops or cutlets are somewhat simple foods. Top them off with onions or capsicum and these vegetable sides mesh together in taste just by cooking them on the barbeque.

Make it easier on yourself. Gather up some pre-cut vegetables and pre-made salads from your local supermarket. These same outlets also store, in numbers, some ready-to-grill beef kebobs, marinated chicken, souvlaki and fish. Depending on what you want to cook, this could save a considerable amount of preparation time.

Pick up bunches of strawberries and grapes, a few watermelons, cherries and some rock melons while you're at the supermarket. Arrange these fruits in a stylish platter and you have a simple yet tasty and attractive dessert. Oh, it's also important to keep these fruits chilled. Maybe place the platter on a large tray filled with ice. It's up to you what recipes you want to dish up for your guests but you can have all sorts of different barbeques.

For an informal outdoor barbeque, attempt having a BBQ ribs cookout. Ribs can take quite a while to cook so remember to start a few hours early. Serve the ribs up with some garlic bread and corn on the cob straight off the grill. On the other hand this type of barbeque is neglecting the little ones.

For a cookout centered around kids, I recommend giving the children a choice between hotdogs or burgers. Remember to teach them about adding a few greens on their plate! Place salads out with carrots and celery sticks so they can add it to their plates themselves without being forced to. If you're looking to entertain by sophistication (for dinner) try serving up some grilled salmon, baby Asian vegetables and some steamed white rice on the side.

Hopefully, these ideas can get you going, but take note that I didn't get into detail, so unless I studied hospitality/catering I probably would have already floored you with hundreds of ideas, which is why I'm moving your attention to this handy little book - Super BBQ Secrets. It contains easy to read guides to throwing a 'kickass' barbeque. It will save you time AND money for every barbeque event you plan on having. For loads of other terrific barbeque secrets, keep coming back to my blog at least once a week to find newly added barbeque recipes, so YOU can cook up your own unique BBQ ideas.

Hot Chocolate-A Drink From Long Ago

Can you imagine a better way to warm up than with a big mug of hot chocolate on a cold windy winters night? Things sure have changed from the xocolatl as it was known by the Mayans.

The Origins of Hot Chocolate

Xocolatl when it was transported to Europe by the conquistadors, was the reserve of the rich who first called the drink itself chocolate. Later, when solid bars of chocolate became more common, the term hot chocolate was used to avoid confusion. In fact at first the beverage was consumed cold and had a spicy flavor and was valued as much for its healing properties as much as an exclusive treat.

Originally, chili was a key ingredient of the drink hence the spicy overtones. It is only today that chili is making reappearance in chocolate as an enhancer of the cacao bean base of all good chocolate.

The xocolatl was first boiled then allowed to rest and was later drunk cold as a frothy but bitter concoction. The Europeans initially did not find the drink in its original from to suit their palate and made numerous changes, including using milk instead of water and adding sugar, cinnamon, and vanilla. The Europeans also preferred their drink hot instead of cold, leading to what we now know as hot chocolate.

Varieties Available Today

Hot chocolate or hot cocoa, which came first? The Europeans were the first to melt chocolate bars in milk and called it hot chocolate. Cocoa powder became the base of a very different drink with a more bitter flavor. But the two drinks eventually malted into each other and the term hot chocolate was adopted as a generic term for both methods. The only real common ingredient however was milk and at least one form of a cacao bean!

You will quickly find a shop that will make your chocolate drink just right. You can take the same ingredients for every drink but its how you use them that matters. A little bit like coffee. If you dont treat the ingredients right, youll ruin the drink. Of course there are a thousand and one varieties open to you, from frozen hot chocolate to fruit and herb infused varieties. It seems that there is no end in sight.

You can look at online services and find plenty of home delivery services. Several pre mixed powdered versions of all the latest drinks are just waiting for your pleasure!
